The 2020 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report: A Digital Collage of Compliance

Transforming Complex Policies into Fantastic Worlds

Throughout the 2020 pandemic, innovative ideas emerged, repurposing elements from familiar contexts to solve universal problems. Inspired by this metaphor, designer Adriana Solis Martinez created the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report as a digital collage, simplifying complex policy concepts into relatable illustrations. This report embodies the University of Illinois at Chicago's principles of diversity, innovation, and collaboration.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report stands out as a unique project that represents the essence of the University of Illinois at Chicago's diversity. Through digital collages, seemingly unrelated elements come together to illustrate and represent the university's unique elements, including individuals, backgrounds, and fields of study. These elements harmoniously work in sync, materializing each section's purpose through fantastic and surreal worlds, mirroring the university's commitment to fostering innovative ideas that transform the world.

The project's realization involved a combination of vectors, antique pen sketches, vintage illustrations, and contemporary photography. Using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, the designer crafted images and infographics that were then assembled with Adobe InDesign. The final result was a visually stunning interactive PDF document, distributed digitally to up to 35,000 email addresses and made available to the general public through official websites.

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report breaks away from traditional compliance documents by visually interpreting abstract and complex policy and safety concepts. Each section's illustrations and data visualizations provide the university community and the general public with a comfortable approach to essential and relevant data that could influence their university or prospective college life experience.

The project, which started in May and concluded in December 2020, was the result of extensive research and a deep understanding of the content. The design team overcame challenges by continuously researching audience preferences, current digital collage tendencies, and finding a balance between the institution's personality and its core diversity.

The 2020 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is a testament to the power of the real-life collage technique. By combining seemingly unrelated elements into new landscapes, this report simplifies complex concepts and policies into fantastic and beautiful surreal worlds. It embodies the diverse essence of the University of Illinois at Chicago and showcases the institution's commitment to fostering knowledge that transforms the world.

This outstanding design was recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Print and Published Media Design category in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report exemplifies these qualities, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology.
